Sean and I finally got the flowers planted today. The flowers look good, but they're not quite picture-worthy when they are just wee little plants in the ground. Let's hope for the best. Here are some close-ups of some of the prettier blooms.
The Victoria Day fireworks have been going off each night since Saturday starting around this time (9PM). They really freak the dog out. I took Leia outside for a pee on Saturday night and it was the one time I've ever seen her run straight back into the house afterward - usually she wants to sniff and wander, no matter what the weather is like. Sean just took her out and she was so freaked out, she wouldn't even pee - she just ran back towards the house. She's been trying to find a place to hide ever since, but keeps changing her mind on where she wants to be.
We had a nice long weekend, but I don't feel like I accomplished as much as I would have liked, especially in the garden. However, the weather was pretty crappy (mostly cold and rainy) so it wasn't just an issue of laziness or procrastination. Sean picked up a lot of slack for me though - he edged most of the flower beds (and only quit because the edger broke); he also dug up the flower beds to get rid of all the weeds and grass that like to grow in them. This pregnancy thing does seem to have its perks! I still need to actually plant my flowers, but that will happen as it warms up this week.
I took these photos on Saturday just before we left town to visit my parents. I'm so happy that my clematis is finally looking healthy after two summers of disappointment. Some of my tomato plants are starting to get tiny fruit which makes me think I'll actually have more than 2-3 tomatoes per plant this year.
I need to take more pictures of my garden, but here is a start.
Here is a picture of the full arrangement including the daisies so you can get a feel for just how big that plant is.
This is the third year that this clematis has been in the ground. This is the healthiest it has ever been. I love clematis so this makes me really happy. I am looking forward to the flowering and hope to actually photograph the blooms this time. (by the time I got to it last year, the blooms had all died off.)
There are other pictures on my Flickr site, but these are the most interesting ones. I hope to get more flower and plant pictures up soon.
Gardening season is approaching quickly. I did some weeding and pruning last night, but haven't really done much else in my garden yet. My perennials are looking promising - pretty much everything from last year is back and growing. My ivy took quite a hit due to the frigid temperatures we had this winter. I lost a lot of pieces from that plant this spring. Hopefully the trim I gave it encourages it to survive. My clematis is looking very promising. It is growing leaves like crazy. I hope to see blooms for it for more than two days this summer. As long as I manage to get a picture of those blooms this summer I will be thrilled. I was so mad when I missed them last year.
I'm planning to get the flower beds edged this week. That will make everything look so much neater - like real gardens! Outside of that, I am just daydreaming about what flowers I want to have in the garden this year. I know what kind of hanging plants I want (pink impatiens - they do so well!), but I'm not 100% sure of what annuals I want. I need plants that don't need a lot of babying and can possibly handle abuse (I'm not always a consistent waterer). Suggestions are welcome.
Suggestions are also welcome for tomato varieties and herbs. I usually plant lots of Genovese basil, cilantro, oregano and sometimes rosemary in pots because I use them in nearly everything I cook in the summer. I also have chives in the ground that are on their third summer and they're looking great! What other herbs should I put in? Should I plant my basil in the ground? I have a nice sunny spot for the tomatoes and herbs, but they don't get as big as they should. (Probably due to that inconsistent watering problem I have).
Tomato varieties I have tried include Early Girl, Jet Star, Sweet Millions (cherry tomatoes). They do okay, but I don't get nearly the amount of tomatoes that I probably should. Again, this is probably due to watering/fertilizing issues, but any recommendations for successful tomato crops you've had (especially if you're from the Toronto area) would be welcome.
